Camping Tent Fabric & Material Guide
Two tents can look identical and differ by 300 gsm of fabric, a coating class and a zipper supplier. This guide names the spec lines that decide whether a camping tent lasts a season or a decade — and how to read them on a quote.
The fabric families we actually use
- TC210 polyester-cotton canvas — water-repellent 400 mm, 65% polyester / 35% cotton, double-side treatment. Used on our cotton cabin, tipi and tarp tents. Breaths and condenses less than pure polyester.
- Polyester Oxford (300D / 600D) — PU3000mm coating, UPF50+. The workhorse for value and weight.
- Polyester taffeta (190T) — PU1000mm, used on lightweight shade and shower tents.
- Poly-cotton 280 g — used on awnings and side walls where drape and UV matter.
What the numbers mean
- Denier (D) — yarn thickness. Higher is heavier and typically more tear-resistant, but also heavier to ship.
- PU mm (hydrostatic head) — 1000 mm sheds light rain; 3000 mm handles storms; 4000 mm is awning-grade.
- UPF50+ — blocks 98%+ of UV. Relevant for shade shelters and awnings.
Coatings, seams and floors
- PU coating — the waterproof layer; quality is in even application, not just the number.
- Seam taping — taped seams are what keep a storm out; ask whether seams are taped or just sewn.
- Floor — PVC mesh fabric (300–600 g/sqm) on our cotton and cabin tents resists ground moisture and abrasion.
- Frame — aluminum (lighter), iron (cheaper, heavier) or fiberglass (pop-up and shower tents).
How to choose by use
- Comfort / breathability / glamping — TC210 cotton canvas (see the Lodge Cotton Tent 275).
- Value / weight / car camping — 300D/600D Oxford (see the 5m Rectangular Tarp).
- Light shade / shower — 190T taffeta (see the Manual Shower Tent).
How we verify fabric
Every fabric roll is checked for weight, coating, color and defects before it enters the cutting room, and finished tents are sampled for waterproof pressure and zipper cycles. Full third-party reports (Bureau Veritas halogen, Intertek flammability) are available under NDA — see the factory page.
Tell us the fabric class, coating and colorfastness you need and we will quote against it line by line. Start from our OEM/ODM guide or send a brief.

FAQ
What is the difference between cotton canvas and polyester Oxford?
Cotton canvas (our TC210 polyester-cotton) breathes better and condenses less, but is heavier and needs dry-before-storage care. Polyester Oxford (300D/600D with PU coating) is lighter, cheaper and waterproof off the roll. Pick by use, not by price.
What does PU3000mm mean?
It is the hydrostatic head: the fabric resists a 3000 mm water column before leaking. It is the number that decides whether a tent shrugs off a storm or wets you at 2 a.m.
Are YourTent tent fabrics tested?
Yes. Fabrics and finished products are tested through international third-party labs — Bureau Veritas halogen reports and Intertek flammability reports — available to serious buyers under NDA.
