Canvas Tent Care and Maintenance: Cleaning, Waterproofing and Storage

A canvas or poly-cotton tent can last 10 years or more if it is treated right. The secret is simple: never pack it wet, clean it gently and refresh the waterproofing before it fails. This guide covers the routine that protects your investment.

Why canvas needs different care

Canvas and poly-cotton breathe, which reduces condensation, but they also absorb moisture. Polyester and nylon tents dry faster. Cotton-based fabrics need thorough drying and occasional reproofing to stay water-resistant and rot-free.

After every trip

1. Sweep off dirt, leaves and bird droppings before they stain.
2. Let the tent dry completely, even if it looks dry. Check the seams and folds.
3. Pack loosely in a breathable bag; never use a sealed plastic tub for long storage.
4. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

How to clean canvas

Use a soft brush and cold water. Mild soap is fine for heavy spots, but avoid detergents, bleach and fabric softeners that strip the water-repellent treatment. Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry.

Reproofing the fabric

When water stops beading on the surface, it is time to reproof. Spray a canvas-specific waterproofer evenly on a clean, dry tent. Pay attention to the seams and any areas that touch the ground. Let it cure fully before packing.

Mold and mildew

If mold appears, brush off spores outdoors, then clean the area with a diluted vinegar solution or a specialist canvas cleaner. Rinse, dry and reproof. Do not ignore mold: it weakens fibers and creates permanent stains.
