A rooftop tent gets you off rocks, mud, insects and cold ground. Most come with a built-in foam mattress that is roughly 5–8 cm thick. Ground tents rely on separate sleeping pads or air mattresses, but they offer more floor area and headroom for changing clothes or waiting out rain.

Setup and pack-down time

Hard-shell rooftop tents open in under a minute. Soft-shell models take 3–8 minutes. A quality ground tent takes 5–15 minutes plus sleeping pad inflation. If you move campsites daily, the rooftop tent saves noticeable time. If you stay in one place for a week, the difference fades.
