How to Develop a Custom Rooftop Tent: A Practical Path

Updated September 2026  ·  YourTent · Rooftop Tent Manufacturer, Xiamen

A custom rooftop tent is a real product development project — but it doesn't have to be an 18-month odyssey. Here is the practical path: what to decide first, what to leave to the factory, and how to get to a product your brand actually owns.

Start with the brief, not the design

The tents that fail commercially are usually well-built answers to the wrong question. Before any drawing, decide:

Platform decision: base on proven structure or develop new

Most successful brands do the first for their launch product and the second for their third or fourth — once sales data tells them which structure is worth the investment.

Materials and hardware: where the money goes

Each choice moves unit price and MOQ. Ask the factory to quote two or three configurations per component so you can see the trade-offs instead of guessing.

Branding and packaging

Logo placement (embroidery, patch, print, woven label), zipper pulls, hang tags, manual, box design. Plan packaging at the design stage — a rooftop tent's box dimensions drive your freight cost, and freight is a real share of landed cost for bulky goods.

Working with the factory R&D team

At YourTent, OEM projects run through a 20-person R&D team that releases 10+ new models per year. You do not need a finished CAD file — reference products, sketches and a clear brief are enough to start. Expect the factory to push back on engineering details: their pattern makers know what sews well at line speed, and that knowledge is part of what you are buying. Full process in from prototype to mass production.

FAQ

What does a factory need to start a custom rooftop tent?

A target vehicle type, sleeper count, weight ceiling, target price and any reference products. A rough sketch or competitor photos are enough to begin.

How much does custom tooling cost?

It depends on scope — aluminum shell molds and new frames are the major items. We quote tooling separately from unit price so costs stay transparent.

Can we test the tent on our vehicles before ordering?

Yes. Pre-production samples can be shipped for on-vehicle fit and road testing before mass production is approved.

You bring the idea. We make it happen.

Bring a target price, a market and a rough concept — a reply with next steps, timelines and pricing logic follows within 24 hours.
