OEM Rooftop Tent: What You Need to Know

Updated September 2026  ·  YourTent · Rooftop Tent Manufacturer, Xiamen

OEM sounds simple: find a factory, put your logo on the tent. In practice the brands that succeed treat it as product development. This guide covers what actually happens in an OEM rooftop tent project — and what you should settle before paying for anything.

OEM, ODM and private label — the real difference

These three terms get mixed up constantly, and the difference decides who owns what:

Most successful first projects start ODM and move toward OEM: pick a proven platform, change fabrics and features, and only invest in fully custom structures once the first orders have proven demand.

What you can actually customize

What you should bring to the factory

The factory brings pattern engineering, fabric sourcing, prototyping, testing and production. At YourTent that includes a 20-person R&D team that releases 10+ new models a year — the same team that runs OEM projects.

MOQ, tooling and cost structure

For standard models our minimum opening order is 50 pcs, with mixed models supported. Fully custom structures need new patterns and sometimes mold tooling, so MOQ and unit price are quoted per project scope. What moves the price:

Timeline of a typical project

Realistic first-project timeline from first contact to goods shipped: 6–10 weeks, including two sample rounds. Read from prototype to mass production for the full stage-by-stage breakdown.

Quality and compliance

Ask any factory you shortlist for its quality system — not just a promise. Ours is certified to ISO 9001, with fabric and product testing through international third-party labs (Bureau Veritas halogen testing, Intertek flammability, independent material reports). Full reports are available to serious buyers under NDA.

Five pitfalls that sink first OEM projects

Short on time?

Start from a proven platform. Browse our rooftop tent range, pick the closest model, and ask us what can be changed within your MOQ budget. That conversation takes an afternoon, not a quarter.

FAQ

How long does an OEM rooftop tent project take?

A private-label rebrand can ship in 4-8 weeks. A fully custom model with new tooling typically needs 3-6 months from drawings to mass production.

Can I change the tent's dimensions in an OEM project?

Size changes usually require new shell molds or frame tooling, which adds cost and lead time. Fabric, color and accessory changes do not require new tooling.

Who owns the design in an OEM project?

In OEM you own the design; in ODM the factory owns it. Put IP ownership and market exclusivity in writing before tooling starts.
